Volkswagen’s Latest California Camper Takes Camping to New Heights

Volkswagen has unveiled its latest innovation in the world of camper vans: the seventh-generation California. Scheduled for release in June, with deliveries commencing in the latter half of the year, this new model is poised to redefine the camping experience with its cutting-edge features and practical design.

A Modern Take on Classic Comfort
Derived from the Volkswagen Multivan MPV and built on the MQB car architecture, the new California boasts a sleek profile and spacious interior. Measuring 5173mm long, 1941mm wide, and 1990mm high, it offers ample room for both passengers and cargo.

Innovative Design and Functionality
One of the standout features of the new California is its dual sliding doors, providing convenient access to the interior from both sides of the van. Additionally, the kitchen area has been enhanced with larger worktops, a hob, a coolbox, and a sink, all easily accessible from outside. Optional awnings can be fitted to either side of the van, extending the outdoor living space.

Tech-Savvy Interior
Inside, California boasts a new control unit with a 5.0-inch display, allowing users to manage various functions such as raising the pop-up roof, adjusting interior lighting, and monitoring water and waste levels. These features can also be controlled remotely via smartphone or through the touchscreen infotainment system.

Powertrain Options
While California offers traditional petrol and diesel engine options, it also marks a significant milestone as the first Volkswagen camper van to offer a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Combining a 1.5-liter turbo petrol engine with an electric motor and battery, the PHEV variants deliver impressive performance and efficiency. Details on electric-only range and battery size are yet to be confirmed, but early estimates suggest a range of around 25 miles on electric power alone.

Versatility and Customization
With five specification levels available—Beach, Beach Tour, Beach Camper, Coast, and Ocean—buyers can choose the configuration that best suits their needs and preferences. From basic seating options to fully equipped camping setups with kitchen facilities and sleeping accommodations, the California offers a range of choices for every adventure.

Looking Ahead
While pricing details for the new California have not yet been announced, it’s expected to command a premium over its predecessor, particularly for the PHEV variants. Nevertheless, with its advanced features and versatility, the California remains a compelling option for camping enthusiasts.

The Future of Camping
As we eagerly anticipate the arrival of Volkswagen’s electric camper van based on the ID Buzz platform in 2025, California continues to set the standard for innovation and comfort in the world of camper vans. With its blend of modern technology, practical design, and legendary Volkswagen reliability, California is poised to lead the way into a new era of camping adventures.
